White bass will run upstream every year in Texas' lakes and reservoirs.
As Spring draws near, the annual Texas white bass, also called 'sand bass' runs upstream from reservoirs into rivers and creeks to spawn, creating a prime fishing opportunity for anglers and hence dubbed the "sand bass run."
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department recently reported on the annual bass fishing event and highlighted hot fishing spots with public access and tips on what to use as bait to catch sand bass, along with area weather conditions.
According to the report, "due to the dry summer, some rivers and reservoirs in the state are currently experiencing low water levels and low flows, which could impact the timing of the white bass run, adding that anglers should check the water levels and river flows before heading out to fish."
Night fishing using lights or around lighted docks, with artificial lures such as small jigs and crankbaits, was suggested as a tip, and the daily bag limit for sand bass is 25 with a 10-inch minimum length, the report said.
Here are the listed fishing spots with free public access for this year's Texas sand bass run.
Sabine River: Free public access to the Black Shoals fishing hole is about 3 miles upstream, above Toledo Bend Reservoir in Panola County. Anglers have lake access at the Grand Bluff boat ramp, which offers 275 feet of river frontage and a single-trailer boat ramp.
Colorado River: River access is available at the Colorado State Park, allowing bank anglers to fish for sand bass without a fishing license at Colorado Bend State Park, TPWD reports. In addition, the park offers a boat ramp and bank access.
San Gabriel River: Public access is available at a point called "Dickerson's Bottom" in the Granger Wildlife Management Area in Williamson Co. the report notes it's a prime spot for sand bass fishing.
Neches River: The area offers nearly 6,000 feet of river frontage for bank fishing and includes a boat ramp and kayak launch. Public access is available at Chandler River Park.
Llano River: Access to the river is provided through the Kingsland Slab RV Camp, with 750 feet of river frontage along the Llano River; the site offers free public fishing access and is located at 7300 River Oaks Dr. in Kingsland.
