Anshuman Sen, a prominent personality in the marine industry, has recently been elected as a “Fellow” of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), the world’s premiere learned society for marine professionals, headquartered in the UK. This prestigious recognition is conferred to individuals who have made significant contributions to the marine industry and have demonstrated exceptional expertise and knowledge in the profession.

To be elected a “Fellow” of IMarEST, an individual must meet a set of strict criteria, which include demonstrating a high level of knowledge, competence and commitment involving superior responsibility for the conceptual design, management, and the execution of important work in a marine related profession as well as a record of original or significant contribution to a marine-related profession, sustained over a number of years.

Mr. Sen has been working in the marine industry for 25 years and has established a reputation as an internationally recognized expert in marine engineering consultancy and technical ship management. He has been actively involved in a number of vessels retrofit projects from exhaust gas cleaning systems, and ballast water treatment systems to reefer expansion projects and has made notable contributions to the industry through original research published in the Marine Engineers Review Journals.

In recent years, Mr. Sen has given a number of technical presentations for MSC Ship Management and was instrumental in successfully replacing the rudder carrier bearing of the vessel MSC Elbe while she was afloat, a procedure which usually requires the vessel to dry-dock. He has been actively involved in the Institute of Engineers (India), marine division where he was also elected a “fellow” and played a key role in advancing the industry's understanding on the reason for marine auxiliary boiler tube failure through his published research.

His most notable achievements include formulating a procedure to re-time marine auxiliary engines in the event of crankshaft slippage, which can be implemented by a vessel’s engineers without shoreside assistance. His white paper on the subject was published by the Institute of Marine Engineers and has since had a significant impact on the profession.

He is a recipient of an O1A extraordinary ability visa, issued by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) granted to Individuals with an extraordinary ability or achievements in the sciences, education, business, or athletics.

IMarEST representative Ms. Charlotte Briggs said, "We are proud to recognize Mr. Anshuman Sen as a 'fellow' for his outstanding achievements, he has made significant contributions to the field of marine engineering and has set an example for others to follow."

Mr. Sen said, "I am honored to have received this recognition and am proud of the contributions I have made to the marine engineering fraternity. I am committed to continue my work in this field and to contribute to the development of more sustainable and efficient solutions for the maritime industry."

His current area of focus is on decarbonization and the viability of future sustainable marine refrigerants. The “Fellowship” status of the IMarEST is a testament to Mr. Sen’s exceptional achievements and the hard work he has put in to advance the industry. He will continue to be a valuable asset to the marine industry and a role model for professionals in the field.
